Medical Abortions by Pill

Medical Abortions: First Trimester, Second Trimester, Late Term Abortion (10 to 24 weeks gestation) No Surgical Instruments Used 94% of Time – 98% Completion of Abortion in Less than 24 Hours With Average of 10 Hours to Complete Abortion Process.

Performing abortions without the use of surgical instruments is becoming more common. At the Abortion By Pill facilities we have been performing abortions with the use of medications for over 12 years. The majority of our abortion procedures at 17 weeks and above are performed using this technique. There are three ways to perform the medical abortion procedure. 1) Injecting medication into the uterus, 2) taking medication by mouth or inserting into the vagina or 3) giving medications intravenously. Each of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages.

Due to the higher complication rate associated with the intrauterine medications used to induce labor, we do not employ this method in our Abortion By Pill offices at this time. We provide the medical induction method using medications taken by mouth, inserted vaginally or given intravenously. Additionally, another medication may be given that helps speed up the delivery process. Prior to adding the use of this last medication, it would take an average of 18 to 22 hours to complete the medical induction procedure. Now the average induction at the Abortion by Pill facilities are 10 hours (range 2 to 30 hours). In essence, 99% of procedures at the Abortion By Pill offices are completed within one day using the medical induction technique.

Note: This procedure is very safe and highly efficient. Less than 10% of our patients require pain medications. The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, and elevation of the temperature. The advantage of the medical induction procedure is that over 90% of patients do not have to have surgery and the fetal tissue is delivered intact. This is important for the patients and families who may want to see, hold, or say goodbye in their own special way.

For women between 10 and 16 weeks gestation who do not want a surgical procedure, this is the best option. It requires the patient to stay overnight in our medical facility.

Risks of Medical Induction

Infection, rupture of the uterus, blood clots in uterus, heavy bleeding, laceration or torn cervix, a perforation of the wall of the uterus, pelvic infection, incomplete abortion, anesthetic related complications, and in rare cases, maternal death. There have been no deaths associated with an abortion in our offices. To reduce the possibility or incidence of a live birth, all patients 21.6 weeks pregnant or further will receive an injection of medications into the fetal heart, or given a fetal intramuscular injection, or instilled into the amniotic fluid. This stops the fetal heart activity immediately or at least within a few hours of injection.
